Care and maintenance will depend on the type of Grass. The following information is general. Turf suppliers will advise on specific maintenance for specific Grasses. We will supply a lawn maintenance program with each varity of turf purchased.
Fertilizing
Most grasses will benefit from up to four applications of fertilizer per year with at least an application in early Spring. Be aware that over fertilizing can damage a lawn.
Weed Control
The control of weeds is vital to the health and appearance of a lawn. Remove weeds before mowing. Be very careful with BUFFALO please read all labels before straying weeds.
Mowing
Improper mowing practices can damage a lawn. Mowing frequency depends on the season, how fast the lawn in growing, and, the type Grass. Do not mow in the heat of the day. Do not mow if the soil is dry.
Lawn mowers should be maintained properly and blades should be kept sharp.
Consistent low mowing is not good for a lawn. As a general comment: Pick a grass height and “mow frequently enough so as not to remove more than one third of the leaf blade a single mowing”. If the grass has been allowed to grow too tall “raise the mowing height and gradually lower it back to the original height over a few mowings”.
Lawn Clippings
Lawn clippings should be used for mulch, either back into the lawn or spread evenly onto garden beds. “Clipping removal is generally not recommended on most turf grass areas”. Returning clippings to the lawn will “recycle valuable nutrients to the soil thereby reducing fertilizer requirements”. Clippings should be spread evenly and thinly on the lawn so as not to shade the grass. The piling up of lawn clippings is hazardous and dumping of lawn clippings and garden waste is hazardous and illegal.
Aeration
Aeration of lawns, punching holes and removing small cores of soil, “relieves soil compaction which improves water and air movement into soil, thus increasing rooting, and greatly improving turf grass health”. Aeration is very beneficial for high traffic areas like footpaths and playing fields.
Watering
Watering frequency depends on the season, the rain frequency, the type of Grass, the colour of the lawn and the existence of water restrictions. It may be necessary to water the lawn in order to protect your investment and to maintain a healthy, good-looking lawn. The ideal way to water a lawn is with properly laid soaker hoses or with an automatic underground sprinkler system (water restrictions allowing), or if you are keen or in the right area, via a recycled water system. Early morning watering is preferable.
